London, England

London is the political, economic and cultural capital of England and the United Kingdom. It’s a modern 21st century city with a rich history that stretches all the way back to Roman times. Situated on the River Thames in the south east of the island of Great Britain, London has been a major settlement for two millennia since it was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. It’s a leading global city, in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, research and development, fashion, media, and tourism as well as one of the world’s leading financial centres. London’s ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 2.9 square-km medieval boundaries. Immersed in history, reminders London’s rich past are everywhere. The city’s buildings are stunning milestones in a unique and captivating biography, and many of them are instantly recognisable landmarks. There’s more than enough contemporary innovation (the Shard, the London Eye, the planned Garden Bridge) to give it a modern feel, but it never drowns out London’s seasoned, millennia-old narrative.

There’s so much to see and do in London, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. One of the world’s most visited cities, it has something for everyone: from history and culture to fine food and good times. The city boasts four World Heritage Sites: The Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey – site of British monarch coronations, the Tower of London, Maritime Greenwich and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. At its centre stand the imposing Houses of Parliament and the iconic ‘Big Ben’ clock tower. Across the Thames River, the London Eye observation wheel provides panoramic views of the South Bank cultural complex, and the entire city.

A tireless innovator of art and culture, London is a city of ideas and the imagination. Return time and again and you still won’t see it all. London and its magnificent treasures await your visit!

A Beautiful Setting

Highlights of what you’ll experience on your 12-day trip to England and France

Paris is France’s capital and most populous city. It’s an international center for fashion, art, food and culture. Situated on the river Seine, its enchanting 19th-century cityscape is interwoven by broad boulevards. Famous landmarks include the Eiffel Tower, the Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe. The city is well known for its cafe culture, and designer boutiques along the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle has been a royal residence to British kings and queens for over 1,000 years. It was built in the 11th century after the Norman invasion of England, and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe. The castle occupies 13 acres and combines the features of a fortification, a palace, and a small town. Its architecture and history lends it a place amongst the greatest European palaces.

Vimy Ridge

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is Canada’s most extraordinary mark of respect overseas. It is dedicated to the memory of Canadian Expeditionary Force members who fought and died during the First World War. It also serves as a tribute for First World War Canadian soldiers killed or presumed dead in France who have no known grave. The site is regarded as one of the most inspiring First World War monuments of all.
